Inductee Biography for BOB SHANE & THE KINGSTON TRIO

Bob Shane & Kingston TrioBob Shane and the Kingston Trio were inducted into the Arizona Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame on Saturday, August 13th, 2011 during a ceremony at the conclusion of the Kingston Trio’s 12th Annual Fantasy Camp, held at the Scottsdale Plaza Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Like the Beatles, the Kingston Trio created a national audience for their new style of music, causing a ripple effect on the entire music industry. When their hit “Tom Dooley” went Gold in 1958, the folk revival was born. The first ever Grammy Awards took place that year, and the Trio won. There was no Folk category at that time, so their Grammy was won in the Country & Western Category. The Folk Category was created the next year, and the Kingston Trio won for Best Performance, Folk, for their album Kingston Trio at Large. Late 50s through the early 60s, the Trio enjoyed unprecedented record sales and worldwide fame, influencing the musical tastes of a generation.

Mr. Shane is a longtime Arizona resident, and the surviving founder of the trio, which started in 1957 and is still going strong. Martin Guitar has honored Shane with the Bob Shane series of Martin Guitars. He’s played live to over 10 million people.
