For consideration for induction in the Arizona Music and Entertainment Hall Of Fame I have many names to suggest but there are two people who I’d like to bring to your attention.

They are Tanya Tucker and Johnny Western.

Tanya Tucker grew up in the small town of Willcox, Arizona. As a young girl she entered local talent contests at the suggestion of such established country entertainers as Rex Allen and Ernest Tubb. Tanya honed her skills at the Arizona State Fair and various other venues in the state. At the age of 13 she landed a major recording contract with Columbia Records in Nashville. Her first big hit was DELTA DAWN. Over the years she has established herself as a major country and pop entertainer and has won numerous music industry awards and had many number one records. Tanya has always had a soft spot for the state of Arizona. The state she got her musical start in.

Johnny Western is quite an entertainer as well. Starting in radio and television Johnny migrated to California at the urging of Gene Autry and ended up playing guitar in his touring band in the 1950′s. Mr. Autry also helped young Johnny get into acting and he appeared in many western movies and tv shows. One major tv western he guest starred in was
HAVE GUN, WILL TRAVEL. As a thank you to star Richard Boone for giving him a shot at being on an episode Johnny sat down and wrote THE BALLAD OF PALADIN. The song ended up as the westerns theme song for several years it ran on CBS television. Johnny wrote several other TV western series lyrics. Johnny lived in the Phoenix area for many years while playing local gigs and touring in the Johnny Cash roadshow as a featured guitarist. Johnny Western is the consummate pro and walking encyclopedia of western songs, movies and tv shows.

Please consider Tanya Tucker and Johnny Western for induction into the Az Music and Entertainment Hall Of Fame. Thank you

  2. Even though working mostly in Country Music since 1970 in Arizona, I cannot help but endorse a major talent from our hometown of Phoenix. His name is Ron Keel, and has consistently been a fantastic singer, musician, and entertainer of exceptional quality. He signed with Gene Simmons of KISS in the early 80′s charting 3 major hits. MTV exposed the act KEEL to a new generation with the song “The Right to Rock”. Ron Keel has sold over 4-million copies worldwide. Even though he has enjoyed much success in the Rock style he has to be known as just a great singer/entertainer. Shortly after Maryvale High he was headlining 30,000 seat venues world wide, and even had a short but sweet encounter with Black Sabbath. Now signed with Unerversal in Hollywood Ron Keel has just released a new album in the UK that will debut in the US in March 2010. A fantastic show in Tempe last year and the 150 shows per year in Las Vegas along with his 2nd European tour in as many years coming up, will keep his focus on performing. Ron has over 60 soundtracks in Movie and Television that continually solidify his marketability. A break from Rock in the early 90′s, and subsequent return to Phoenix with the effort Ronnie Lee Keel in the Country arena produced the same outcome. Country Album of the year, Rodeo Band of the Year, USO tours, and a tremendous respect for his talents were the outcome again. He enjoys helping AMEHOF with fundraisers when possible, and is extremely proud of his home state of Arizona. His presence in the industry has earned Ron Keel this nomination and deserves your consideration. Learn more at http://www.ronkeel.com

I think Jim West’s comments are solid and I agree that Tanya and Johnny Western are as Arizona as Ladmo bags and both belong in the HOF without question. I am also in total agreement with Gary Clemmons’ comments about Ronnie Lee Keel. He had huge success nationally with “lots of hair” band Keel back in the ’80s and has put together a great career in the country genre these days, as well. It’s his national juice, though, that puts him in the Hall- especially as a native “Zonie. I’m just sayin…

There were some really great nominees this year, and although I agree that some are more deserving than others, it is just a popularity contest in the end.
There are many unsung heros that made Arizona entertainment flourish and many will never find the recognition-If it was up to me then Hans Olson & Jon Iger would be in the front of the pack for giving all Arizona a venue to continue to participate and be acknowledged.
I produced the Arizona Entertainment Awards for nine years- creating a day in honor of all the great individuals that support the entertainment and support industries- my archives are now the property of AMEHOF and I hope they will continue to be showcased.
AMEHOF needs to support more of the living legends that still reside in Arizona, because remembering the past is one thing, yet inspiring the future via programs and acknowledgements to the people that still contribute to make Arizona entertainment a viable resource is far more important.
Keep up the good work and maybe someday I will have the opportunity to come to one of your events. Good luck and keep up your valuble contributions.

I agree that Hans Olson should be an inductee,as well as others like the “Hoodoo Kings” and Bill and Susie Tarsha and venues like “the Gallopin Goose” in Coolidge ,and the now closed “Y” bar at Eloy where so many performers like Buck Owens,Marty Robbins and Waylon Jennings got their start.

  6. Noel Fray says:

I, too, support the idea of Hans Olson being inducted to AMEHOF.
