Bob Cox has been entertaining Az country music audiences for some 70 years! From Night Clubs, Dude Ranches, Ball Rooms & Concerts. His career began in Peoria, Az in 1939. He had top 10 hits in Phx with ‘If you’ll be mine again’ and ‘Don’t hold her so close’ which also went to #1 in Alaska. He was produced by L.A based Fabor Robinson in the early ‘60’s and declined leaving Prescott to further his career. Choosing to stay at home with his wife and 5 kids. He musically mentored the likes of: Marty Robbins, Richie Albright, Rod Hart & Craig Delphia to name a few. It has been said that many of our current Hall of Famers came to see him perform for inspiration! His voice was inspiring. People excelled under him as he taught them and let them grow into their talents! Bob was part of the early Az music scene playing along side folks like Jimmy Wakely, Lew King, Marty Robbins. The early trails he blazed should not go unnoticed. Among many other notables Bob Cox also deserves a spot in the Az Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame for his contribution to the entertainment community of AZ.

I am writing in support of Miguel Bernal's induction. He and his wife Ebba brought the Classical guitar to the Phx. area via Tucson and L.A.in the early 70's. Miguel's shop in the Arches across from ASU was a center for lessons, concerts and professional advice for fans of the guitar. The Maestro Andres Segovia would visit Miguel when playing Gammage Auditorium. Miguel and his students performed around the Valley at parks and schools to further interest in Classical music. He also played venues such as Tony DeMarco's Living Room and the major resorts in the Phx. area. We lost Miguel a few years back, but Ebba is still with us. It's time to recognize the life work of this important pioneer. Without Miguel and Ebba, the music of the Classic guitar would have taken much longer to reach AZ..

Born in Chicago to famous western movie star and singer REX ALLEN, Rex Allen Jr. followed in his dad's footsteps to become a very successful country recording artist and singer. With a deep baritone that sounds very much like his famous father, Allen has scored several top ten hit records on the country charts and has entertained all over the world.

With his famous actor father living in Hollywood in the fifties one of Rex's fond memories is living next door to THE LONE RANGER, actor Clayton Moore. John Wayne was one of his fathers close friends in Hollywood in addition to many other actors of the day.

Rex Jr. wrote "I LOVE YOU ARIZONA which in 1982 would become the official Arizona State Song! In the 90's he was co-starring on the Statler Brother popular weekly show and even had his own spin-off show on the old NASHVILLE NETWORK on Cable Television.

Today Rex still performs his western ballads and country hits all over the USA and beyond. He has started his own western music internet music channel and also markets his father's old movies over the internet.

Each October REX ALLEN JR. carries on the tradition of the REX ALLEN DAYS FESTIVAL in his fathers home town of Willcox, Arizona. This is an important Arizona event that has been held for 60 YEARS.

Consider Rex Allen Jr. for induction into the AMEHOF as his father REX ALLEN was inducted in 2007. Thank you.

Johnny Western is an entertainer that has strong roots to Arizona. John was one of the many entertainers that Ray Odom booked into several venues in Phoenix in the early 60's. But Johnny started out in radio as a disc jockey.

In the 50's Gene Autry hired him as a guitar player and he went on the road with his band. With aspirations to be an actor as well as singer Mr. Autry helped Johnny with an acting coach and the end result was many guest starring parts in movies and western television shows. He had a small role in an episode of the western HAVE GUN, WILL TRAVEL and as a "thank you" to the producers and star Richard Boone, Johnny wrote the song the "BALLAD OF PALADIN" that would become the tv westerns theme song for many years. In addition, Western co-wrote the lyrics to the show BONANZA as well.

By the early 60's Johnny started touring with Johnny Cash as a guitar player and was on the road with him well into the 90's.

Johnny Western would return to country radio for 25 years before retiring back to Mesa, Arizona in 2010. Johnny still performs his western ballads in shows at various dates nationwide as well as at home in Arizona.

Johnny Western is in the Country Disc Jockey Hall of Fame in Nashville and the Western Music Hall of Fame and several others. Please vote for Johnny Western for induction into the AMEHOF.

Thanks

One of the nominee's on this years ballot that I feel strongly should be in the AMEHOF is RAY ODOM. Ray is a pioneer radio broadcaster, promoter and booking agent. In 1955 he started the very first full-time country station in Phoenix (KHEP) In the 60's he owned KHAT and still into the 80's was the general manager of KJJJ radio in Phoenix. In addition he was part owner of KMOP radio in Tucson.

Ray was very well known as a booking agent and music promoter in the 50's into the 70's hosting the ARIZONA HAYRIDE shows at the old MADISON SQUARE GARDEN and RIVERSIDE BALLROOM venues. Ray was the first person to bring to Phoenix many legendary singers such as Patsy Cline, Frank Sinatra and was also the first to book ELVIS at the State Fair. In addition, Odom also announced popular wrestling matches on television in Phoenix and Tucson.

Mr. Ray Odom is 86 years old and resides in Sun City with his wife Dolly.
Please strongly consider his induction into the AMEHOF. Thanks

We added Arizona Entertainment History Trivia to our Feb 25th Outreach presentation and it was a hit.

Trivia questions included:
Name the Arizona native from Flagstaff who played the stagecoach driver in the film "Stagecoach"? Hint: He was raised in Kingman.

What is the stage name for this Cortez High School graduate whose real name is Vincent Furnier?

What is the first move filmed in Old Tucson?

When Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr. lived in Tucson, his grandmother gave him his first guitar. His successful career saw him leaving on many jet planes as he toured the world.

He was a NASCAR driver, singer/songwriter, multiple Grammy winner and was born in Glendale.

Thanks to Marshall Trimble who contributed many of the trivia questions.
And thanks to everyone who participated in our outreach programs. We will be scheduling more soon.

I agree with Andrew Means on his comment.
Although the nominees are all deserving- it would better serve the AMEHOF to keep people in mind that will participate and are still actively contributing to the Arizona entertainment scene.
I support Grant Wolf, because of his large fan base and because he was instrumental in teaching so many of us music, but if their is going to be an induction ceremony it is important that people show up to the event to support the living community.
Many people do not even remember many of the venues- so there should be a seperate category for old lost places to be remembered- ie Dooleys, Jds ect.
Remembering the past is important, but for any fledgling organization- inspiring the future seems to have missed its mark on this round.
Hans Olson and Jon Iger are in the dailey support of the Arizona community and even though they might not care- there should be a place to honor them for their contributions- congratulations on all the nominees and I hope it draws a huge crowd in support of all the great people who helped make Arizona entertainment a place that showcases all the great entertainers from the Grand Canyon State.
Good luck on this years event- you will be in my thought from my home in Washington State- all the best in 2010.
